Tips for Raising Money

  • Start early! Start NOW!
  • Don’t be SHY!! If you don’t ask, the answer is always NO!
  • Make it personal – always tell people why you are involved.
  • Don’t forget to ask at your place of business – large companies usually like the tax write-off.
  • Talk to everyone you come in contact with – farrier, vet, tack store, grain store, at other rides – refer back to tip number 1!
  • Ask your local store (horse or otherwise) if you can place a collection jar on their counter – make sure you have your flyer there explaining what the donations are for.
  • SEND REMINDERS out 2-3 weeks prior to the deadline for those who may have intended to donate but simply forgot.
  • Email!! What a powerful tool! Send information and a request to everyone in your address book and DON’T FORGET TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO PASS IT ALONG TO EVERYONE IN THEIRS! Include the link to online donation to make it easy for them to follow through.
  • Ask friends and family to donate to the ride in lieu of giving you a gift for an occasion.
  • Set a $$$ goal and tell people what it is, keep them up to date on your progress. Funny, some people like to be the one to "put you over the top."
  • Send PERSONAL “Thank you” notes to all your donors! This makes people feel special and ensures they will think of you next year and remember the note.
  • Reciprocal donations – for everyone who asks for your sponsorship, ask for theirs in return.
  • Go to your favorite riding club meeting and stand up and ask the club to sponsor you.
  • MOST IMPORTANT TIP - HAVE FUN!!! If you are enthusiastic about what you are doing, people will respond with the same enthusiasm.
  • If you need more tips, see DoJiggy’s Participant Fundraising Library for more tips, some fun ideas, and sample documents you may use.
